“艾美奖”由两个奖构成，通常说的“艾美奖”是指黄金时段电视节目艾美奖，由总部位于洛杉矶的电视艺术与科学学院颁发。另外一个日间节目艾美奖，由总部位于纽约的国家电视艺术与科学学院颁发。

电视艺术与科学学院在1949年首次颁发艾美奖。1999年，负责日间节目艾美奖的国家电视艺术与科学学院成立了 N ATAS国际理事会，总部位于纽约，代表着近40个国家和地区的150多家公司和组织。每年都有包括中国在内的不少亚洲国家节目入选。被提名国际艾美奖的电视节目长度不得少于30分钟，分为电视剧、纪录片、艺术纪录片、流行艺术、艺术演出、儿童和青少年节目6大类。
